Am I too young to get my tongue pierced? READ DETAILS?
For me, piercings are about a matter of maturity rather than age, but anyway – I’m 15 and I want my tongue pierced.
Not to impress anyone, not because I want to be “cool” or “in”, CERTAINLY NOT for sexual reasons – solely because I like how they look, I believe one would suit me, and because I think it is a less common and unique area to have pierced.
I’ve done plenty of research on safety, healing times and aftercare. I’ve asked people’s opinions – but I don’t want it done for anybody but MYSELF.
I also know of a reputable studio where a few of my close friends have gone for body piercings. They’ve had no problems.
They are small and fairly discreet and NO other piercings appeal. I have three in my right ear lobe, one in my left, and a lower left cartilage piercing.
The question is, am I too young? I feel I am mature enough to make this decision for myself.
In terms of the 15 – 18 issue: No, you are not too young – in my experience there is very little difference in the maturity level between the ages of 15 and 18.
What you have to ask yourself is why you want piercings in the first place – it seems to me that these things are an emblem, “look at me – I’m old enough to do what I want, disregard my parents AND I have style to boot” (because you think you are being discreet – how is this discreet? the moment you open your mouth people will see it). Well, piercings have no style in my opinion because true style is much more subtle and esoteric for both sexes. Unfortunately this is not something you can really understand at 15 (or 18, like I said).
If you are currently at an age where this is what is appealing to you, then that’s what you have to do. Live is about living – so if this is where you are – you cannot but go for it. You can’t gain experience without taking action- it certainly doesn’t come from simply listening to other peoples advice. You have to do for yourself in order to blossom and all these things are part of the process.
Still, my real opinion about piercing which I stated above (I had 9 of them – like I said – you have to live life at the stage that you are – now they are all gone – I’m a very busy adult now and it was too time consuming to keep them all clean) is that they are a blaring cry for attention. Now at 32 I think a truly cool way to get attention is for a creative accomplishment, not because you had the balls to pierce your tongue. Eventually you may come to see this whole situation in a different light, so think about it a little first.
One last point you need to factor in to your decison-making: How much or little (you didn’t mention) this will upset your parents. Until you become a parent yourself you cannot appreciate the amount of love parents have for their children, hence – also the amount they will be deeply hurt by your actions. If it will really kill them, ask yourself if it is really worth it to break their hearts.
Either way, it’s not a life shattering issue – and not permanent – so just think it over a little and act accordingly. Good luck!
