I think it's mostly a personal statement and a rejection of views in society about what is beautiful and lovely. Beauty is a cultural attribute and socially learned. Different cultures and societies have different views on what is attractive. If I grew up in another location may have different opinions about it. I think these people do not like the idea of a media-driven view of this which is considered attractive in Western culture.

Does it matter if I get my naval piercing with a barbell or a ring???? And how should i clean it afterwards?? I had a body rejection the first time I got my naval pierced, and the piercer said that I could do it again, she suggested a barbell Please help.
Barbells are better because they not only lay flatter and don’t snag on clothing, but the also allow the piercing to heal without the circular shape. A ring will shape the hole into more of a “c” shape than an arc shape like a barbell.
Another thing to be careful of when getting it the second time is scar tissue. I had to have mine repierced and he had to pierce behind the scar tissue and could not use the same hole. The tissue later came out through the top of the hole and later fell off, similar to a baby’s embilical cord. It is important to make sure that the piercer does not pierce through the same hole.
