pros and cons for body piercings

Do I get a tattoo?

In a month I'll be 18 years. My parents never went to piercings and tattoos, but they are really against them either. I have my navel pierced when I was 16 and my father was the one who gave his consent. But my parents do no tattoos. They told me that if I wanted one, should be after you leave (not to be a year). But today, my mother told me that because I'll be 18 years and do not require parental consent, because it is my body and not hers, she does not care if I get tattoo. If I had to get one, I would get a little cross at the ankle. Also, I'm your average girl just occasionally. But I suppose the fact that I know is Permanent scares me. So I need feedback. Do you regret getting a tattoo? (I am not talking about whether they were drunk when you have one), you should get one? What are the benefits? Drawbacks? Thank you!

Tongue Piercing?

I want to get my tongue pierced in a few weeks, but I still need to get my parents’ permission. My mom is almost guaranteed to say yes, but I still have to convince my dad. He thinks that I’m too young to make decisions about piercings because they can cause permanent trauma to your body. My aunt has had her tongue pierced twice, and it healed wonderfully both times. She is the one who will pay for my piercing and take me to get it. I need to compile a list of pros and cons for getting the piercings. For all of the cons though, I need a preventative measure if possible.
Thanks so much!
PS. I’ve asked this question already, and I got a lot of negative answers, rude opinions and such. Please only positive tips!

I am a teacher and I have my tongue pierced. I know what you mean about the negative answers— I just always tell everyone its just a piece of jewlery- thats all! They don’t need to read to much into it! I like mine for a couple of reasons- it is a little different these days. Everyone is getting a monroe or their labret done. I can get away with a lot, but a face piercing is hard to cover up and most jobs require it! I like the little flash of silver! I also have a few that are UV reactive that I wear to go out, they glow under most club lights which is cool and always gets attention.

It does hurt but no more than any other piercing. Your tongue will feel like its been burned (think really hot soup!) Keep it iced (bring a cup with you!), and don’t try tough foods for a few days. Also, Pamprin really seems to help with the swelling and pain for some reason!

Make sure you go to a licensed body piercer, not just somebody at the mall! They should use a barbell that is 3/4 inch long to allow for the swelling. My tongue really didn’t swell much– after about a week the long barbell was banging the roof of my mouth and under my tongue. I went back and got the piercer to switch me to a 5/8 (the normal size). After a few weeks, even that seemed big. I ended up having to get a 1/2 inch barbell special ordered. It fits my mouth a whole lot better, it dosen’t bang my teeth (which is something dentist and parents worry about!). Good luck!
