I Editorial a research paper on the social institution of body modification. I was wondering what are the reasons for others who decide to physically modify their bodies? Any help would be great! We agree with him. We've done it once, feeling a little uncertain, we liked how we felt, so I continued … and now some of us, like me, working in the area and has approximately 75 hours of ink. I wish it was more than that, but it is not. It continuing research. How does the Peace Corps feel about piercings/tattoos?
Are minor body modifications such as facial piercings (septum, lip, eyebrow) and a few visible tattoos (not offensive ones) considered unprofessional or inappropriate in a Peace Corps setting? Would I even get hired? Does it depend on the country/area? Hypothetically, what about dreadlocks?
Most developing countries see women with tattoos as sexually promiscuous, so you would need to have your tattoos covered up at all times in most PeaceCorps placements. Facial piercings are not culturally acceptable in many countries either (some prostitutes identify themselves to potential clients with facial piercings), plus they can interfere with highly-physical work, so those will need to go. I have seen aid workers with dreadlocks; you would need to be prepared and willing to cover your hair in certain placements, depending on local culture.
