Because tattoos / piercings?

Why do people have tattoos and / or piercings scar and permanently disfigure your body? My brother has tattoos on each arm near the wrist and has to hide for the job. It looks like a monster and I can not understand if it is to attract attention, either because it has an identity problem. Can someone please give me a good reason not to say that it is art or expresssion. An artist is painting and another and another. Answer the question if it is understood, haircuts, makeup, art, etc., is not a permanent scar or mutiluation in your body. If you are an artist and use his body as a canvas, why do you Permanente, knowing that it can not grow more skin?

I have three tattoos and I have mine because I wanted to achieve.

What do Christians think of body modification?

When I speak of body modification, I’m generally talking about piercings and tattoos. But out of curiosity, how do Christians feel about those things as well as plastic surgery?

My family are some serious southern Baptist, and are a bit freaked out about my choice on getting a piercings (other than the ears) and considerations of getting tattoos in the coming years. Just wondering if it’s just them, or Christians in general that are so opposed to this…

Stupid question or not I want to know. And like all my questions, no offense intended… some people may get offended from this for some odd reason.

A lot of it isn’t necesarrily from a “religious” stand point as in the Bible says…

A lot of it is from an appearance stand point.

Taken to extremes, body modification isn’t “generally” accepted. Tre are groups who admire body modifications and the more and more extreme the better, but the majority of society thinks it is cheap and sleazy.

When your parents grew up, only tramps and “Butch women” had tattoos and it was most likely unheard of to have anything pierced other than a woman’s ears.

I’m 37 and have a tattoo and when I was 20 I had one ear pierced. Back then a guy could get away with the LEFT ear being pierced but that was it. Right ear as supposed to be a sign that the guy was gay. I don’t know for sure if this was true but the only guys I saw with pierced ear was the right besides a couple of guys who were out of the closet with both ears pierced.

You can reduce their fears or objections at least a little bit if you assure them that you are not going to get anyhing rude, crude, or obscene for a tattoo and it will not be a full body tattoo.

As for the piercings, there are SOME taht can only be said to be of a sexual nature. Genetal piercings for example since the only people that will be seeing them are the MD, the person you are going to engage in sexual activities with, and the guys or gals in the locker room maybe, unless you show it off on a dare or lost bet or you are just an exhibitionist.

They could be basing their objection on the vanity factor and the Bible DOES mention that vanity is a bad character trait. (I forget the exact phrasing and verses though)

I don’t mind seeing a tattoo on a girl if it’s small, but the piercing thing just doesn’t float my boat and I find the lip, nose, and other facial piercings just revolting and unsanitary in the case of lip, tongue, and cheek.
