Apocalypto is a good source of information. the Mayan culture?

I am writing a research paper on the Maya and allows us to use film source. I know that the scenario of "Apocalypto" was not true, but what about the rest? The architecture, rituals, body art and piercings, clothing, technical form of hunting, … What is it all in the film besides the story? But I need whether it is a reliable resource! Thank you!

Not really. It is entertainment, not a documentary.

Is the movie Apocalypto a good source of info. about the Mayans?

I’m writing a research paper on the Mayan culture and we are allowed to have a movie as a resource. I know that the story line of Apocalypto isn’t true, but what about everything else? The architecture, the rituals, the setting, the sacrifices, the body art and piercings, the clothes, everything… Is all that what really happened? I just need to know if this movie is legit on what the Mayans really did! Thank you!

Hollywood theatrical movies are NEVER! a good source for research. Hollywood films have an agenda. They are made to entertain an audience and to make money. Yes, the writers and the director have a story and ideas they want to convey, but they are bound by the higher goal of making a movie audiences will enjoy, which in turn equates to profits. Because of this, they often change facts and re- arrange the order of the actual events to help move the story along. They add events that never happened, for dramatic or comedic effect. They gloss over or omit events which make historical figures look less than heroic. They add characters, such as a love interest that never existed. They combine several people into one character to make the story easier to follow and help the audience relate to a particular actor. Every member of a film crew is bound by the same goal to entertain and make money. A costume designer might come up with something that looks really interesting but it actually is based on an earlier or later time period or maybe they completely invented it. But only historians will know the difference and it looks cool, so they use it. The same goes for a set designers, hairstylists and makeup artists. It has been said, you can often tell when a period film was made, based on the female actor’s hair styles. Because they usually are modified versions of the current hair styles. So, these films end up with a mix of historically correct things and totally fabricated things on screen. If you want facts, read a history book or watch a documentary. But be careful with documentaries. Because of time limits, documentary film makers may have to focus on certain aspects of their story, while ignoring certain other things. They may not have time to explain conflicting interpretations of events, by various experts and historians. That’s why history books, written by highly regarded historians and historical records or documents are the best sources of information. I never get upset like somepeople do, when they see movies that ignore facts. I understand why theatrical movies are made
