How can a bullet pierce the body underwater?
I saw this in a movie so it may not be true (Saving Private Ryan). In the beginning when the US troops fell underwater, there were bullets flying underwater from the Nazis in the air. And I saw bullets hitting the troops down there and saw them getting wounded or killed. How can the bullet pierce the skin even underwater? Was it just the air that made the bullet move so fast that the water couldn’t slow it down fast enough?
P.S.- This movie was based on a true story, so the bullet piercing skin thing is probably possible. I just want to know how.
That was have been a 50 caliber machine gun from a pill box. MythBusters showed that’ll penetrate quite far and be deadly.
Followup – It’s all about hydrodynamic drag. Water does slow bullets down quickly, or even breaks them up into pieces, but large fast ones from the depicted machine gun can still travel far enough to kill underwater due to there high momentum.
