Queen of diamonds sets a tummy trend

Now, in a move that once again highlights how interested she is in fashion and shopping, the younger sister of Venus Catsuits has opted for body piercing and she’s started a real trend in the women’s game on the WTA Tour.

There are no rules governing jewellery, although the Williams family did have problems when Venus previously wore beads in her hair that often fell out on court, annoying her opponents and bringing warnings from the umpire.

The diamond belly button jewellery was the most-dazzling element of her 6-3, 6-2 victory over Uzbekistan’s Iroda Tulyaganova, another of the ‘belly button girls’ on tour, when they met in the Hopman Cup zentai bodysuit in Perth last week.

Also taking part in that event was world No4 Kim Clijsters, girlfriend of the world’s topranked male – Lleyton Hewitt – and a fellow devotee of the belly button gem.

This must have raised eyebrows at home as Hewitt has previously voiced his dislike for this form of jewellery. But while he may be less than enthusiastic, other girls on the tour are rushing to join the gang.

London-based Olga Barabanschikova, of Belarus, previously hailed catsuit as the next Anna Kournikova, has one along with young New Zealander Shelly Stephens and Jill Craybas from the United States.

Of course, the sport is waiting to see how Kournikova, the ultimate tennis babe, responds to this latest trend as she prides herself on being a fashion leader, if not a tennis champion.

Daniela Hantuchova, the longlegged Slovakian beauty, is another who will be closely watched in Melbourne to discover if she has opted for the new fashion accessory.

As a WTA spokeswoman said: “The belly button stones are purely catsuits an individual fashion choice.

“Some girls do have them, as many girls their age walking down the street also do.

“As far as I am aware this is not a sponsored activity. I used to have one, but that was when I was a little younger!”

If Serena tires of her diamond, the world No1 can always do something with the pair of diamondencrusted costume spiderman  golden tennis balls that she received for partnering James Blake to victory in the Hopman Cup.
